PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): PRP is produced from your own blood. Blood is mainly a liquid (called “plasma”), but also contains small solid components, including platelets. Although platelets are best known for their importance in blood clotting, they also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors that are very important in healing injuries. PRP is plasma containing many more platelets than typically found in the blood.

How is PRP made: blood is drawn from the patient with a kit similar to a normal blood test. The platelets are separated from other blood cells during a process called centrifugation, and then extracted in a concentrated form called PRP.

What is a PRP injection: After creating PRP from a patient’s blood sample, Dr. Workman injects the solution into the target area, such as an injured joint or tendon. PRP therapy increases the concentration of bioproteins – or growth factors – in a specific area to reduce inflammation and accelerate the healing process. Dr. Workman performs PRP injections in his office, and also during surgical procedures to complement the healing of musculoskeletal injuries following surgical repair.

Why is PRP effective: Your body’s joints, tendons and ligaments receive limited blood flow; it is therefore difficult for these areas to heal on their own, and healing can be quite slow. PRP contains concentrated quantities of the patient’s own healing factors. When Dr. Workman injects these concentrated growth factors into targeted areas of injury, this encourages the growth and regeneration (healing) of new, healthy cells.

What injuries can PRP help: Weakened ligaments and tendons, and joints compromised by osteoarthritis, can be safely and effectively treated with PRP therapy. These include:

  • Muscle strains/sprains

  • Tendon and ligament strains, sprains and tears; and

  • Osteoarthritis of jointsโ€‹

Not all musculoskeletal injuries are amenable to PRP treatment. It is important that you first be evaluated by Dr. Workman to discuss appropriate treatment options.

Traditional and Concentrated PRP Therapy: Dr. Workman offers PRP therapy using different processing systems, which provide different levels of platelet concentrations and PRP solutions. Dr. Workman will discuss with each PRP candidate the various options available, and help them decide on the appropriate PRP option to help them meet their treatment goals.

Stem Cell Injections (BMAC)

What is Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC): BMAC is derived from your own bone marrow, a soft tissue found inside bones that contains powerful healing cells called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), along with platelets and growth factors. These cells play a key role in repairing damaged tissue by promoting the growth of bone, cartilage, muscle, and other supportive structures. BMAC therapy delivers a concentrated dose of your body’s own regenerative cells directly to the site of injury.

How is BMAC made: Bone marrow is typically aspirated from the back of the pelvis using a minimally invasive technique. The sample is then processed using the Angel® cPRP and Bone Marrow Processing System, which separates and concentrates the most beneficial components—stem cells, platelets, and growth factors—while removing unwanted materials.

What is a BMAC injection: Once prepared, the concentrated bone marrow solution is injected into the targeted area, such as a damaged joint, tendon, cartilage, or bone. This helps jumpstart and enhance the body’s natural healing response. BMAC can also be used during surgery to support tissue repair and recovery.

Why is BMAC effective: Many musculoskeletal areas—like cartilage, tendons, and ligaments—receive limited blood flow and struggle to heal on their own. BMAC delivers a high concentration of regenerative cells directly to the site of injury, stimulating tissue repair and reducing inflammation. MSCs also release healing signals that guide the body’s repair process.

What injuries can BMAC help treat: BMAC therapy is used to treat a variety of orthopedic and sports-related injuries, including:

  • Chronic tendon or ligament injuries

  • Cartilage damage

  • Mild to moderate osteoarthritis

  • Bone defects or fractures

Personalized BMAC Therapy with the Angel® System: The Angel® system enables your physician to customize the cellular concentration in your BMAC treatment, ensuring the therapy is tailored to your specific condition and healing goals.

Not all injuries are candidates for BMAC therapy. A consultation with Dr. Workman is necessary to determine if this regenerative treatment is appropriate for you.

A breakthrough technology designed to help relieve the tendon and plantar fascia pain that limits your life.

VISCOSUPPLEMENT INJECTIONS

For the Arthritic Knee

For those patients suffering with a painful arthritic knee, a gel-like medication (called hyaluronic acid) can be injected into the knee joint to provide extra cushion and alleviate pain. Only your doctor can determine if viscosupplement injections are right for you and your orthopedic knee issue.

While not every patient is a candidate for regenerative treatments, Walnut Creek Orthopedics offers non-surgical and less invasive options for patients.โ€‹  The only way to know if you are a candidate is to discuss with your doctor. Please call our office to make an appointment to see if any of our offered Regenerative Treatments are right for you.
